Fiestas
and events in Valencia, Spain
Valencia
celebrates many festivals and fiestas throughout the calendar
year and is adding more and more top flight events all the
time. The opening of the Reina Sofia Opera House has seen
a great many top artists perform in its spectacular auditorium,
the City of Arts and Sciences has played host to many events
including the first ever edition of the Equestrian Global
Champions Tour this year, and with the amazing new construction
of the Ágora Stadium will also play host to the first
Valencia Open 500 tennis tournament.
Already home of the European Formula 1 Grand Prix and succesful
hosts of the Americas Cup, Valencia is truly making its mark
on the major sporting and cultural scene.
Not
forgetting of course the time old traditions of the "Las
Fallas", July Fair, Maritime Holy Week, Our lady the
Foresaken and 9th October -"Valencia independance day"
celebrations which date back centuries and improve each year
with party like atmospheres and emotion at its highest.
Las
Fallas - Festival of Fire Valencia - Throughout March,
(finale 15th - 19th)
With thousands of light bulbs strung in garlands and hanging
from columns, Valencia, in all its vivacious splendour and
amidst the eager revelry of its people, stages the most spectacular
of festivals in March - the Fallas.
If
you´ve never been in a war zone, Las Fallas is the closest
you will get to anything resembling one! Firecrackers and
explosives going off on every street, the smell of gunpowder,
trumpeting parades, the burning of over 350 statues which
are put on display in their full satire and beauty.
Las Fallas is exhilarating, alarming, emotional and horrendously
noisy
and one of the most unforgettable experiences that
anyone is ever likely to have in Spain.

San
Juan - Summer Solstice Valencian Style! - 23rd August
The biggest beach party you will ever see, it spreads
all down the coast of the Valencian Region, from
the capital, Valencia to Alicante.
The
beach fills with bonfires, music, food and drink,
creating an atmosphere like you´ve never seen.
The
aim... party the night away on this the shortest
night of the year and welcome in the start of the
summer.
The
traditions... jumping over the bonfires and making
a wish will bring you all your desires, then at
midnight, everyone into the sea to wet their feet
(and more!) to wash away the sins and woes of the
winter gone by.
But
the basic idea... party the night away! Live stages
with music, lights and dancers help add to the rhythmic
drums that spread along beach with the young groups
who gather. Families from granny to the baby all
head out with picnic chairs and tables, no one is
too young or too old to enjoy this magical beach
party.

TOMATINA
- The Tomato festival in Buñol, Valencia -
26th August
A
battle like you´ve never seen, if you are
not interested in being covered in Tomatoes then
this isn´t the place for you. Tonnes of tomatoes
are lorried in to Buñol on the 26th of August
and used as ammunition in this festival of tomatoes
La Tomatina. Dating back to 1945 when a group of
youngsters got into a pushing fight which expanded
into a street fight and a nearby market stall of
Tomatoes became the perfect supply of ammunition.
On several occasions throughout history, the battle
has been banned, but never successfully upheld,
leading to the town hall eventually announcing it
as an "official festival" and even gaining
a General Tourism Award in 2002.
They now have rules and regulations to help the
thousands of visitors enjoy themselves to the fullest
each year.
